TN govt seeks ₹ 15,000 cr from Centre

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi with a plea for central assistance for various sectors in the affected districts, the state government said here.

“I have submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister detailing the extent of the damage caused by the cyclone,” Palaniswami told reporters in Delhi, adding the state has sought about Rs 15,000 crore.

He said he had also urged Modi to depute a central team to assess the damage, besides seeking an immediate release of nearly Rs 1500 crore towards “temporary renovation” activities.

This legislator, went one step further and arrived at the Legislative Council dressed as the King! Prakash Gajbhiye, the NCP MLC hopes this avatar of him will remind the present rulers their promise to provide reservation to the Maratha, the Muslims and the Dhangar community.

Superstition and looking for luck are a part of daily life in Thailand. In one temple in central Bangkok, visitors hope to find it hidden in the bark of an ancient tree.

Hundreds flock to the Kunnatri Ruttharam temple every week to pay respects to the enormous dead tree trunk, which is draped in flowers and offerings from worshippers who believe rubbing its bark can reveal winning lottery numbers.

The state-run lottery business is booming in the kingdom, with ticket vendors on almost every street corner and buyers poring over numerology charts to pick the luckiest sequence.

India and Australia signed five agreements on Thursday to boost investments and enhance cooperation in key sectors like disability, agricultural research and education as President Ram Nath Kovind met Australian Prime minister Scott Morrison in Sydney.

Mr. Kovind, the first-ever Indian head of state to visit Australia, arrived in Sydney on Wednesday on the second leg of his two nation trip.

Moderate to good rain lashed many parts of the northern district of Tamil Nadu on Thursday. Schools and colleges in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur remained closed due the Met department's forecast on heavy rains. The respective Collectors declared a holiday following rain.
