Two boys, aged 12 and 6, were crushed to death under two giant granite blocks after a lorry tipped over on a house on a narrow street of Nakkalpatty near Kandikuppam here in Bargur on Monday.

The children had come to the house of their grandmother, Murugammal (55) ahead of Deepavali.Twelve-year-old Harish, son of Murugammal’s daughter Sangeetha residing in Bengaluru, was sitting along with his cousin Kaviarasu, son of Murugammal’s son Murugesan, and a relative Chandra, 50, on the elevated porch of the house.

The lorry from Andhra Pradesh was manoeuvring through the narrow street, en route to a granite polishing unit.

The lorry’s wheel ploughed into a pipeline laid for distribution of Hogenakkal drinking water. The driver Narasimhan, 35, of Dhanampatti, lost control. The boys were killed on the spot, while Chandra’s legs were crushed.

Neighbours were alerted following which efforts were made to remove the granite blocks. Fire and rescue services personnel arrived and rushed an unconscious Chandra to the Dharmapuri Government Headquarters Medical College Hospital.

Deputy Superintendent of Police of Bargur M. Baskharan, Revenue Divisional Officer P. Arun, and Tahsildar of Bargur T. Thanikachalam visited the accident site.

Narasimhan was arrested.
