Sunday market vendors, affiliated to the AITUC, staging a protest against government decision to shift the market to another place.

Traders owing allegiance to the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) on Sunday took out a rally to protest against the proposed move of the government to shift the Sunday market to a less crowded place as part of its plan to decongest the town.

The traders, led by Sethu Selvam, general secretary of AITUC, later submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy in the Legislative Assembly.

Mr. Selvam told presspersons that the market had been functioning for over 40 years as a one-stop place for all kinds of wares at affordable rates.

Fee collected

The municipality was collecting a fee from hawkers for setting up temporary shops on Sundays. The government’s move to shift the Sunday market to a less crowded place would eat into the revenue of the hawkers and traders. The government should drop the move to shift the market, he added.
