Rice smuggler booked under Goondas Act

A ration rice smuggler who was arrested by the Civil Supplies CID (CS-CID) recently, for trying to smuggle 16 tonnes of ration rice, meant for the public distribution system was booked under the Goondas Act.

Acting on the recommendations of Superintendent of Police S. Jayakumar, Villupuram Collector L. Subramanian on Sunday ordered the detention of the accused Suresh, 30, of Mottur in Vellore district under the Act.

The accused, who had been indulging in smuggling of rice in Chennai, Vellore and Villupuram districts was arrested on October 4, when a team headed by Civil Supplies CID Inspector Sivasubramanian, intercepted a lorry during a vehicle check and found 16 tonnes of ration rice in the vehicle. Suresh was arrested and lodged in the Cuddalore Central Prison. The detention orders were served on him in the prison.
