: Enabling the common man to better manage ailments and clear misconceptions, the ‘Health Education for All’ public awareness campaign was initiated at Jipmer on Tuesday. The first session ‘Diabetes: How can I manage it myself?’ was handled by Dr. Vivekanandan from Department of General Medicine, Dr. Kadambari from Department of Surgery, Dr. Premrajan and Dr. Swaroop from the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine.

A series of interactive sessions, the ‘Health Education for All’, focuses on building knowledge among the public, patients and care-givers on prevention and treatment of common illnesses, and is expected to improve public awareness on health and diseases.

Dr. Subhash Chandra Parija, Director, Jipmer, said, “In subsequent sessions, we want to cover topics like chest pain- what is the cause and must be done, prostate ailments, cervical cancer, what to do in the case of a snake bite and the need for breast screening.” He said the institution is planning health programmes in women’s colleges in Puducherry.

Dr. Kadambari, who is heading the group said, “We want to expand the initiative with outreach programmes in schools and institutions. The first few sessions will look at common ailments.”

The sessions are conducted in Tamil, and have been planned on 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of every month between 3.30 p.m. and 5.00 p.m. There is no prior registration or fee for participation, and are open to all.
