442 cases settled at National Lok Adalat in Puducherry

Rs. 3.58 crore awarded as compensation to 23 claimants in Land Acquisition cases

As many as 442 cases were disposed of and Rs. 3.58 crore was awarded as compensation during the National Lok Adalat held on the court premises here on Saturday.

Organised by the Union Territory of Puducherry Legal Services Authority, the mega camp was inaugurated by II Additional District Judge S. Mary Anselam in the presence of III Additional District Judge V. Rajasegaran and A. Abdul Rachid, Duty counsel.

In the National Lok Adalat, as many as 740 cases were taken up and claims totalling Rs. 4,29,99,723 were settled for 442 cases, which include pre-litigation and post-litigation cases in the courts.

During the occasion cheques towards payment of compensation to the tune of Rs. 3,58,30,170 were awarded to 23 claimants in Land Acquisition cases by C.V. Karthikeyan, Chief Judge-cum-Member Secretary, UTPLSA. Separate National Lok Adalat benches were also constituted at Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam.

The UTPLSA said Lok Adalat aims at reducing pendency, while at the same time drawing attention of the public to the efficacious alternative dispute resolution method.

No further appeals

All these cases have been settled finally and there would be no further appeals in these cases disposed of on Saturday.

A one-day training programme on Medico-Legal aspects for medical officers, nurses and senior technicians was also conducted at the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Postgraduate Institute.
