he Malad police on Friday arrested Cecelia D’souza (54) in connection with the murder of her son Ronald (31), who was stabbed to death in his Malad residence on Tuesday night.
The police said that Ronald objected to her illicit affair with her former driver leading to the hatching of the murder plot.
On Tuesday, Cecelia had called the police and told her she had returned home after her evening walk to find Ronald lying in a pool of blood in their second floor residence in Tai Mansion building in Malad.
Post-mortem examination later revealed that he had been stabbed multiple times in the chest.
His cell phone and gold chain were missing from the house, and the police had at the time registered a complaint of murder and robbery against unknown persons.
“We examined Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage of cameras outside the building, and saw Cecelia standing outside the building during the time she claimed to have gone for a walk. This discrepancy first pointed the needle of suspicion at her. We then conducted some further inquiries, including checking her cell phone location. We found out about her relationship with Ronald, after which we picked her up for questioning,” said an officer with the Bangur Nagar police.
According to officials, after sustained questioning Cecelia broke down and confessed to have planned the murder.
In her confession, she reportedly told the police that she had an affair with a 25-year-old man for over a year and a half. Her husband had passed away a year ago, after which her paramour started visiting the D’souza residence frequently.
This angered Ronald and was the cause of frequent fights between mother and son, and Cecelia allegedly decided to find a permanent solution to the problem, the police said.
“On Tuesday evening, Cecelia stepped out saying she was going for a walk while Ronald was sleeping in the house. Her paramour, along with a friend of his met her near the building, went to her house and killed Ronald. We are still piecing together the exact sequence of events,” the officer said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikram Deshmane, Zone XI added, “Cecelia has been remanded to police custody till December 17. Efforts are underway to trace and apprehend Cecelia’s paramour and his friend.”
