The Thane sessions court on Tuesday sentenced a woman who had abducted a four-year-old girl from Rabale MIDC in 2016 to four years’ rigorous imprisonment.
Shivani Singh (21) was arrested by the Rabale MIDC police in 2016 after an alert couple, Razzak Shaikh (52) and his wife Ishrat (49), informed the Nashik Road railway police. The couple, while travelling by Vidarbha Express, noticed that their co-passenger, Singh, spoke Hindi with a north Indian accent while the girl, Janvi, spoke in fluent Marathi.
“We produced around six witnesses, including the Shaikh couple from Nashik and a few local residents, who had seen Singh with the child,” sub-inspector Kailas Kodag who was the investigating officer, said.
On July 23, 2016, Pramod Jaiswal, a neighbour of the girl, met Singh on a local train. When she asked him for a job, Mr. Jaiswal took her home as domestic help. Singh abducted Janvi the same day. Madhuri Sakpal, the girl’s mother told the police she suspected woman who had come to Mr. Jaiswal’s house.
Mr. Kodag said, “We did not have any information about her as Mr. Jaiswal had just met her.”
The railway ticket recovered from Singh and eyewitness accounts helped in her conviction.
