A Delhi resident, along with his wife and brother-in-law, was booked by the Vashi police on Wednesday for trying to extort ₹20 lakh from a 26-year-old woman.

The Vashi police said that the woman, a resident of Kalamboli who works at a firm in Vashi, met the accused, Shravan Shukla, when she went to Delhi on an official trip recently.

An officer from the Vashi police station said, “Mr. Shukla and the woman soon became friends and entered into a relationship. Later, Mr. Shukla’s wife found pictures of the woman on his mobile phone and called up the woman. It was then that the woman learnt that Mr. Shukla was married. When she confronted Mr. Shukla, he told her that he hid the truth because he was afraid that she would end the relationship if he revealed that he was married.”

The police said that the woman then started avoiding the accused. On March 22, the woman received a call from Mr. Shukla. He threatened to upload her intimate photos on social media if she did not pay him ₹20 lakh. The officer said, “Though the demand was made only by Mr. Shukla, the complainant alleged that his wife and brother-in-law, who live in Allahabad, also started calling and threatening her about making the photos public.”

The accused have been booked under Section 385 (putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion) of the Indian Penal Code. Assistant police inspector Paritosh Shiurkar said that investigation is on in the case.
