Invoking Maharashtra’s amended law banning cow slaughter and the sale of beef , Mumbai police have booked three persons for illegally transporting a bullock allegedly meant for slaughter.
Slaughter of bullocks is banned in Maharashtra, as is killing of cows (since 1976) and bulls under the newly-amended beef ban law.
The three persons have been booked under various sections of the Maharashtra State Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act, 1995; Sections 5 A (1), 5B, 9, 11, and 9(B), which deal with illegal transport of animals within the State and sale and purchase of the banned animals for slaughter. They have also been booked under Sections 3,7 and 13 of the State Keeping and Movement of Cattle in Urban Areas (Control) Act.
Working on a complaint by animal rights activist Chetan Sharma, the Nagpada police station raided a location in Madanpura locality and rescued the animal, which was then sent to an animal shelter in Malad.
The accused have not been arrested as they have been booked for illegal transportation of a bullock and police did not find any beef in their possession.
“We did not find any slaughtered animal. There was no beef. But we are investigating the matter if the animal was intended for slaughter,” a senior police officer told The Hindu .
