Maharashtra cadre IAS officer Sanjay Sethi has been appointed as the new chairman of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s biggest container port. The post was lying vacant for nearly a year since the previous chairman Anil Diggikar stepped down halfway into his tenure.

“The appointment committee of the cabinet has approved the proposal of Ministry of Shipping for the appointment of Sanjay Sethi as chairman of JNPT for a period of five years from the date of taking charge,” said a Government of India notification.

Mr. Sethi of the 1992 batch had joined the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai as Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) only two months ago. Previously, he was the CEO of Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation.

In the interim period JNPT has been led by Neeraj Bansal as acting chairman. He has been deputy chairman of JNPT for a few years now. Whether he will continue or will be moved to a port in western India is still not known.
