Rain, visibility hit flight operations briefly in Mumbai

Three flights diverted to Hyderabad and Ahmedabad

Flight operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport came to a standstill for 20 minutes after visibility dropped on Monday morning.

The operations were suspended between 9.12 a.m. and 9.31 a.m. following heavy rain.

Two flights, a British Airways flight BA 135 and Spicejet flight SG 8701 from Delhi were diverted to Hyderabad and Ahmedabad respectively. A Mumbai International Airport Ltd. spokesperson said that flight operations had since resumed with delays.

In all, the rain and a drop in visibility resulted in six aircraft carrying out go-arounds (an aborted landing).

Three arrivals and eight departures had to be cancelled as a result. In the evening, according Swedish airline and airport tracking website Flightradar24, the airport reported an average delay of 29 minutes in arrivals, with 148 flights being delayed on arrival. On the departures side, there was an average delay of 35 minutes, with 246 flights reporting delays in departure.
