Navi Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has said the electricity disruption faced by residents of Thane and Navi Mumbai will continue for few more days. This will give MSEDCL time to balance the load between demand and supply.
According to MSEDCL officials, the more cautiously consumers use electricity, the better the situation will be. Around 1.30 a.m. on Friday, a 600 MVA transformer under Rohitra Unit-2, located at the 400 KV Kalwa substation, caught fire. This led to cables of the Rohitra unit-1 transformer being damaged, leaving only one transformer functional for Thane and Navi Mumbai.
Vishwajeet Bhosale, PRO, MSEDCL (Bhandup zone), said, “The issue is with Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL), as both transformers are unserviceable. There is enough electricity, but the load of transmitting the power to different areas is now on a single transformer. The infrastructure has been damaged and our team is doing their best to repair the fault.”
MSEDCL sources said power cuts will be resorted to in Navi Mumbai and Thane to ease the load on the single functional transformer at the Kalwa substation. A planned load management will be executed to make sure the third transformer doesn’t get affected due to high power demand in summer. “The power cuts are conditional as per the the load on the transformer. Our team has been deployed and are working round-the-clock to identify and repair the fault.”
Officials said MSETCL might need a week to repair Rohitra Unit-1, and a month to fix Rohitra Unit-2, which caught fire. The areas affected in Thane circle include Samantanagar, Pachpakhadi, Raheja Complex, Mental Hospital area, Kopri, Vitava, Navpada, Saket, Court naka, Majiwada, Kalwa and Mulund. In Vashi circle, areas between Airoli and Kamothe, including MIDC and Ulwe, will be affected.
