Crime scene: Police personnel inspect the spot on the road in Nerul village where the accused allegedly stabbed his sister to death on Wednesday.

The police are searching for a resident of Nerul who allegedly murdered his sister and attempted to kill his wife. According to the police, the accused Nagesh Babulal Lad (26), committed the crime after finding about an illicit relationship between his wife, Jyotsana (23), and brother-in-law, Jarmanjeet Jagir Singh (35).

Mr. Lad was in jail in a case of voluntarily causing grievous hurt and came out on bail around 15 days ago. “His wife and Mr. Singh used to visit him together in jail and also attend court hearings. The duo started having an affair due to their frequent meetings. Mr. Lad learnt about their relationship while in jail,” senior police inspector Rajendra Chavan, Nerul police station, said.

Meanwhile, Ms. Lad had started staying with his parents in Kukshet village in Nerul while Mr. Lad was in jail, and even after he came out on bail, she did not go to stay with him.

On Tuesday night, Mr. Lad climbed onto the terrace of the residence of his wife at Kukshet and called her for a talk. “The accused was drunk, and after she went up, he slit her throat and fled. She is serious and undergoing treatment at D.Y. Patil Hospital,” Mr. Chavan said.

The accused then went to Nerul village around 4 a.m. on Wednesday, and called for his brother-in-law. But his sister Sunita Singh (29) did not allow her husband and instead she went out. Mr. Lad and his sister had an argument, following which he stabbed her multiple times, around 500 metre away from Yasubai Chawl where she stayed, Mr. Chavan said.

When Mr. Singh stepped out to see what was happening, he saw Mr. Lad stabbing his wife. Mr. Lad then turned to Mr. Singh to kill him, but he ran away. The police said Mr. Lad had been coaxing his sister to abandon her husband but she had not been doing as they had two children.

A neighbour of the Singh family said, “The couple had started staying around two months ago and they would hardly speak to anyone. We never saw fights in their house. Their children were mostly at their relative’s house at Kukshet. We did not hear any cries as the murder was on road and learnt about the crime only by 8.30 a.m..”

The Nerul police have registered a case of murder and attempt to murder, and are on the lookout for Mr. Lad, who was previously an autorickshaw driver.
