World Environment Day was celebrated with great fervour at the Carter Road Amphitheatre in Bandra on Wednesday.
The event was organised by Bhamla Foundation along with the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and the United Nations.
With #BeatAirPollution as the theme of this year’s event, the event aimed at creating awareness of various ways to curb air pollution.
Bandra Cycle Club along with SBI also conducted a cyclothon from the Amphitheatre to Joggers Park. “On this auspicious occasion of Eid and World Environment Day, we urge all the Mumbaikars, especially the youth, to grow as many plants as we can,” said Asif Bhamla, president of the Bhamla Foundation.
Various social workers were felicitated and gifted with saplings to honour their efforts towards making the environment better.
Social media influencers from TikTok, a mobile App for creating and sharing short videos, were also part of the event and spoke about how individual efforts can be made to save the environment.
Rajya Sabha member Majid Memon spoke on how one needs to be more sensitive towards the environment. “The three basic ways are: planting more trees, using car pools or public transport and waste composting,” he said.
A musical campaign named #HawaAaneDe saw celebrities and influencers convey a message of tackling the threat posed by air pollution. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray, choreographer Shiamak Davar, singer Sunidhi Chauhan, lyricist Swanand Kirkire, singer Shaan, music composer Anu Malik, singer Sophie Choudhry, artist Emiway Bantai, television host Maniesh Paul and actor Jackie Shroff were among the others who participated.
