Mehta orders third inquiry into botched eye surgeries

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Ajoy Mehta has ordered another inquiry into the incident at HBT Trauma Care Hospital where seven patients suffered from varying degree of vision loss due to a hospital-acquired infection.

Mr. Mehta on Wednesday said the third probe will be carried out by the additional municipal commissioner (western suburbs).

The seven patients underwent eye surgeries at the Jogeshwari hospital on January 4. All of them contracted pseudomonas, a severe bacterial infection, due to unsterilised medical equipment. While four patients regained some vision in the infected eye, three are feared to have lost vision completely.

After the first two inquiries, the hospital’s medical superintendent was transferred and demoted, while the eye surgeon’s service was terminated. However, the doctors had said that the sterilisation was carried out by OT technicians and other staff who should be held accountable.
