A 10-foot-high compound wall will soon strengthen security at Mantralaya. Work to build the new wall, at a cost of ₹3 crore, is set to begin on Tuesday.
The new wall will be 677 metres in length. It will have a two-foot-high concrete block topped with an eight-foot tall metal grille. The concrete block will be two-and-a-half feet wide.
The State Home Department, after a security assessment, recommended building a new compound wall, along with making several changes in the existing traffic management on Mantralaya premises. As per the new arrangement, while cars will be allowed inside through two gates, they will be able to exit only from the gate near Oval Maidan.
“Only VIP vehicles will be allowed from the main gate. No cars other than those of ministers will be allowed to park near the entrance of the main building,” said an officer from the Public Works Department (PWD), who is privy to details of the new measures. He said that any vehicle that enters the premises will undergo a thorough check.
The wall will have lamp posts every 20 metres, along with CCTV cameras. Two new police chowkies and three bunkers will also be set up. The work order has been issued to Srinath Engineering at a cost of ₹3 crore.
Meanwhile, the PWD official said the demolition of the Asiatic-copy staircase does not have final ministerial approval yet.
