Navi Mumbai: An assistant sub inspector attached to the Kharghar traffic unit succumbed to injuries on Friday. Yashwant Dhondu Shingale (50), who was transferred from the Rabale traffic unit a week ago, was going home on a bike on Thursday night. A speeding trailer rammed into Mr. Shingale’s bike on Taloja-Daighar road. Despite being injured, Mr. Shingale caught the driver and handed him over to the Daighar police.

Though Mr. Shingale was wearing helmet, he was injured below the waist causing bleeding in his internal organs. “He was highly diabetic and had blood pressure, which increased his complications resulting in his death,” said assistant police inspector Praveen Pandey, in-charge of Kharghar traffic unit.

An auto driver helped Mr. Shingale reach Gokhale hospital in Dombivali. “As Gokhale hospital does not have much facilities, he was shifted to AIMS hospital in Dombivali. Being highly diabetic, his bleeding could not be stopped, neither could he be operated upon. He died on Friday,” said Mr. Pandey.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Nitin Pawar and Assistant Commissioner of Police (traffic) Pradeep Mane had visited him after the accident. “He was a good officer and we will try our best to help his family get compensation from the government,” said Mr. Pandey.

Mr. Shingale is survived by his wife and two sons.
