In a literal case of “who will watch the watchmen”, a security guard with a residential society in Gurugram has been arrested for allegedly making obscene calls to a Mumbai-based woman. The police said the accused would target women who visited the building where he worked, using the contact details that they entered in the visitors’ register.

According to the Wadala TT police, investigations were initiated into the matter after a complaint was filed with them on August 30. The complainant alleged that she had been receiving calls from a man who would talk to her in obscene language and later also threatened to kill her.

“We studied the call detail records of the number from which the calls were being made and found that the SIM card was only operational for the duration of the call, after which it would be removed from the handset. Using the handset’s IMEI number, we traced it to Gurugram and a team, led by assistant police inspector Ajay Birajdar, went there for further inquiries,” senior police inspector Rajendra Sangle said.

Mr. Birajdar and his team worked in Gurugram for 17 days, making inquiries in the area where the handset was last located, till they zeroed in on Mangolia Society, an elite residential complex.

“Inquiries with the security guards there revealed that one of them was a native of Fatehpur. As the location of one of the calls was also Fatehpur, we picked up Vijay Gupta (35) for questioning, and he confessed that he made the calls,” Mr. Sangle said.

He said the society had developed an app in which visitors had to enter their contact details, including cell phone numbers, and Mr. Gupta would note down numbers entered by women. He would then go to a secluded spotfrom his workplace and call them. In the first call, he would pose as a delivery boy and get the women’s addresses, after which he would use obscene language and then threaten to hurt them, saying that he now knew where they lived.

“We have found over 400 numbers in his possession, and suspect that he targeted scores of other women. Inquiries are under way to find out if any complaints have been registered in this regard. We have also found out that he was using stolen SIM cards to make the calls, and this aspect is being verified,” Mr. Sangle said.
