Actor Sanjay Dutt, currently serving the last few days of his jail term in the 1993 bomb blasts case, will be released from prison on Thursday.
In 2013, Dutt was sentenced to five years of imprisonment. He had already served 18 months behind bars after being jailed in 1996, and was ordered to serve the remaining 42 months.
“Dutt will be released from the Yerawada central jail on February 25 this year,” Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) Dr Bhushan Upadhyay confirmed.
Dutt’s prison term has been mired in controversies due to the repeated paroles and furloughs he obtained. He first came out of jail on a 14-day furlough, which was extended by a further seven days, in October 2013. He was then granted a 30-day parole which, again, was extended by another 30 days in January 2014.
In December 2014, he got one more furlough so that he could spend bring in the new year with his family. Iin August 2015, he spent 60 days on parole for his daughter’s surgery.
The decision to grant him remission of 103 days in his sentence was taken by the State government on account of good conduct.
Both State government officials and prison authorities had at the time said that he was not being granted any special concessions and was only being given the remissions that any other convict in his place would normally have been given.
