Two days after an autorickshaw driver died when an iron scaffolding collapsed in Dharavi, his family on Tuesday agreed to claim his body after the construction firm, on whose site the tragedy occurred, promised to compensate them. Meanwhile, the Dharavi police on Tuesday arrested one person in connection with the case.
Shahdad Ali Ansari died and two others sustained injuries after the scaffolding of an under-construction building collapsed on Sunday night at the PMGP Colony. The trio was rushed to Sion Hospital, where doctors declared Ansari dead on arrival.
His family had refused to claim the body till their demands were met. “We did not want monetary help but wanted my brother’s family to be taken care of. He was the sole breadwinner of the family,” Ansari’s brother, Nazakat, said.
B.G. Shirke Construction Technology Private Limited, which was carrying out the construction work, has promised to compensate Ansari’s family, support his children’s education and repair his damaged autorickshaw.
“Dharavi being a cluttered area, people often sit next to the construction site. We had spread a green net supported by the scaffolding to prevent plaster falling on people. It collapsed due to the gusty winds on Sunday. We have promised to help the family,” a senior official with the firm told The Hindu .
On Tuesday, the Dharavi police arrested an engineer responsible for putting up the scaffoldings at the project site. “We have arrested Sandeep Gupta of Shirke Constructions and charged him with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and endangering life or personal safety of others under the Indian Penal Code. He was produced in court on Wednesday and has been remanded in police custody till Friday,” senior police inspector Sandeep Patil said.
The iron scaffolding collapsed on Sunday night, crashing onto a pedestrian and Ansari’s autorickshaw.
