Mumbai: The Bhumi Adhikar Andolan along with thousands of tribals will gather at Azad Maidan on Thursday to protest against the bullet train project.
The organisation has condemned the ‘illegal’ detention of Krishnakant Chauhan, a local panchayat member, and Jayeshbhai Patel, an activist, in Surat just before the consultation for the bullet train on Monday.
“Tribals and farmers from Palghar, Thane, Nandurbar, Raigad, and Nashik will participate in the agitation,” Brian Lobo, who is spearheading the organisations fighting for farmers and tribals affected by the bullet train, said.
Tribals have also urged the government to withdraw the notification diluting the power of gram sabhas to prevent land alienation for projects. So far, the projects for which the notification has been used include the bullet train and the prosperity corridor passing through the tribal and forest land.
A delegation will visit government offices with demands to include extension of scheduled areas, granting of land rights to rural artisans, and recognising rights of non-recorded tenants.
