The husband of an ex-NCP corporator was among six people convicted for abetment of suicide of a 24-year-old girl from Koparkhairane in 2009.
Ad-hoc District Judge-1 & Additional Sessions Judge, Thane, G.P. Shirsat, sentenced ex-NCP corporator Rupali Sanas’s husband Vilas (45), Suresh Sanas (49), Rajendra Bhor (51), Ratnakar Awate (35), Kumar Gole (30) and Sandeep Dhonde (32) to five years rigorous imprisonment for abetment to suicide (306), one year for causing voluntary hurt (323) and one year under Atrocity Act, which shall run concurrently.
Political tinge
The suicide of Saujanya Jadhav (24) had earned a lot of flak to NCP and was taken up by the Shiv Sena.
“The prosecution produced 12 witnesses, including five family members, medical officers, and police,” public prosecutor Sanjay Londhe said.
The convicted have also been asked to pay a fine of ₹5000 each, out of which ₹20,000 will be paid to the complainant’s family.
Jadhav, a hardware engineer, had taken an overdose of sleeping pills on June 27, 2009 due to eve teasing by Sanas and his relatives of her sister and her.
They were also threatened by the accused.
The police ignored Jadhav’s family and sent her mother to jail in a false case. This led Jadhav to take the extreme step which led to her death on July 12, 2009.
A mob led by Shiv Sena took her body to Koparkhairane police station after which a case of abetment was registered.
