Triple Talaq Bill: Kanthapuram slams MPs

Published - August 01, 2019 10:55 pm IST - Kozhikode

Reacting to the absence of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) Rajya Sabha MP Abdul Wahad during the debate on the Triple Talaq Bill in the House, Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar said on Thursday that MPs of opposition parties should act responsibly.

In a statement here on Thursday, the Musliyar said that the principal duty of an opposition party in a democratic country was to resist and question the Bills used for weakening the values of democracy. The Bill on triple talaq was passed in the Rajya Sabha with the cooperation of opposition members.

The absence of several members from the opposition while discussing the Bill, and the deliberate non-involvement in the voting are distrustful.

Even while having a majority in the Rajya Sabha, the opposition parties cunningly helped the government pass the Bill. All these members had secured seats with the support of minorities from different States, he said.
