The State School Arts Festival, to be organised here from January 15 to 21, 2015, will be a plastic-free affair. Providing details of the preparations for the 55th edition of the event here on Saturday, the organising committee members said that different publicity steps, including erection of sculptures in different part of the city, will herald the event. “But no flex boards will be used for publicity purposes,” said Additional Director of Public Instruction L. Rajan.

The festival will be opened by Chief Minister Ommen Chandy on January 15 at the Malabar Christian College High School grounds, the main venue.

Actors Mammootty and Mohanlal will be the chief guests. Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan will be the chief guest of the valedictory function on the concluding day.

An organising committee office for the week-long event was opened by Education Minister P.K. Abdul Rabb at the BEM Girls High School at Mananchira on Saturday. The organisers said that various steps had been planned to ensure the smooth conduct of the event in Kozhikode, as was done in 2010. An awareness class for autorickshaw and taxi drivers under the Regional Transport Officer (RTO) would also be part of it, said Mr. Rajan.
