The Diocese of Thamarassery has said that Fr. Joseph Pamplany, who was booked on the charge of cheating a parishioner with a fake diamond purchase deal, has been relieved of pastoral duties.

In a statement here on Tuesday, Fr Abraham Kavilpurayidathil , PRO and chancellor, said that the diocese would not support him in the case.

Fr. Pamplany, a parish priest under the diocese and former vicar of St. Mary’s Church, Kattullamala, had allegedly secured around ₹87 lakh from a parishioner with an assurance to make him a partner in the sales of a diamond treasure worth ₹200 crore.

The diocese, which asked Fr. Pamplany to cooperate with the police investigations, also clarified that it had no role in the dealings undertaken by the priest. It was also unfortunate and unjustifiable that the parishioner had dragged the Bishop and the diocese in the case, it said.
