Mathew J. Palakal, who teaches at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) in the U.S., and known for introducing the concept of bibliomics in developing BioMap, will lead a course in data and text mining in bioinformatics at the National Institute of Technology – Calicut (NIT-C) next week.
BioMap is a system which implements methods for the analysis of health and biological literature data for identifying biological networks, providing computerised support for disease targeting, and for the stratification of diseases from electronic health records.
The NIT-C course is supported by Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN), a programme launched by the Ministry of Human Resources Development to bring the best international talents to Indian campuses, K.A. Abdul Nazeer and G. Gopakumar, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, NIT-C said.
Dr. Palakal has long research and development experience in bioinformatics, specifically in mining biomedical and electronic health records.
The system he introduced is currently being tested in a variety of biomedical, health and STEM research areas.
Dr. Nazeer said that the course aims to introduce students to the computational aspects of text data mining in the context of biomedical literature and numerous data mining and statistical techniques that are necessary for handling biomedical texts.
