The Motor Vehicles Department has issued stop memos to the operators of 12 private buses in the city after conducting a flash fitness inspection with the support of a special enforcement squad.

Officials attached to the Regional Transport Office said the memos were issued after identifying serious safety issues. These buses would be allowed to resume service only after correcting the fitness issues, they added.

In the inspection, the fitness certificate of a private bus was permanently cancelled after noticing serious mechanical faults. The bus was having worn out tyres and faulty speed governors.

Officials also confirmed that the checking would be continued in the days to come in the wake of rising number of public complaints pointing at the poor condition of city service buses. Permit of unfit buses would be suspended permanently during the drive, they added.
