MES to commemorate Gandhi with year-long programmes

The Muslim Educational Society (MES) will organise an year-long special commemoration programme named ‘Gandhi Smrithi’ covering about one lakh students under its 160 educational institutions in the State. Thushar Gandhi, great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, will launch the programme at Tagore Centenary Hall in Kozhikode on October 22.

At a press conference here on Friday, MES chairman P.A. Fazal Gafoor said there would be 150 innovative events under Gandhi Smrithi, which would be held in the presence of eminent writers and speakers.

Formation of Gandhian Chairs in colleges, Gandhi Yatra for students covering all important destinations associated with Mahatma Gandhi in India, screening of Gandhi films, special exhibitions, inter-collegiate competitions and cycle rallies would be some of the events to be conducted as part of the celebrations, he said.

Dr. Gafoor said the decision to celebrate the 150th birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi among students was taken to fight against the deliberate attempts from some quarters to disregard or disparage his contributions to the country. “It is also shocking to note that there are even plenty of books available online serving the purpose,” he said.

“We have also decided to produce a new documentary with 30 episodes, which will unveil the Gandhian life and ideologies in a better way to the students. Noted film director Kamal will supervise the project,” said Dr. Gafoor. This would be in addition to the screening of rare Gandhi movies and documentaries.
