Passengers in three cars sustained minor injuries when a tree fell on their vehicles at Puthiyangadi near here on Sunday. The incident took place around 12 noon following heavy rain and wind.

Two car passengers who felt uneasy after being trapped inside the vehicle for a long time were admitted to a private hospital in the city. Most passengers were pulled out of their cars by locals before the arrival of the Fire and Rescue Service Force.

Three others watching rescue activities sustained minor injuries when the branches of the fallen tree fell on them during clearing work. Some vehicles parked on the premises of a workshop were also damaged in the incident.

Traffic was stalled on the Kozhikode-Kannur National Highway for nearly two hours after the incident. Vehicles from Kannur side and Kozhikode were diverted via Beach Road.

Families relocated

The Kozhikode coastline witnessed the threat of sea erosion, forcing some of the families to move to safer locations. Revenue officials visited the coastal families near Bhatt Road, Beypore and Vadakara to check rehabilitation activities. Three families along the Vadakara coastline were relocated to safer locations.

In Thamarassery taluk, 15 houses were partly damaged in the downpour. Power supply was interrupted in the village areas as several trees were uprooted in the strong wind. The Thamarassery taluk hospital building was damaged after a giant tree fell on it in the morning. However, no one was injured.

Revenue officials said the service of taluk-level control rooms would be available round-the-clock to provide support in case of rain-related calamities.

Instructions were issued to village officers to find suitable locations for opening relief camps in case of emergency situations. Residents closer to the Kuttiyadi reservoir were asked to stay alert in the wake of opening of dam shutters.
