Representatives of various traders’ and exporters’ forums submitted a list of priorities for the future development of Beypore Port to Ports Secretary Sanjay M. Kaul during his visit to the city on Friday. He was here to review the ongoing development activities and hold discussions with stakeholders in the sector.

Launching of tourist vessel services from Beypore connecting various domestic and international destinations was one of the demands put forward by forum leaders who interacted with Mr. Kaul at the Beypore Port office.

“In our memorandum, we called for tourist vessel services to and from Sri Lanka and Lakshadweep to attract more passengers. Passenger-cum-cargo vessels can be considered to even West Asia and Sri Lanka,” said Munshid Ali, a functionary of the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Mr. Ali, who is also a member of the Customs Trade Facilitation Council, said the launch of feeder vessel services from Chennai, Mangaluru, Mumbai and Gujarat ports should also be considered, apart from ensuring a smooth road facility from Mysuru to Coimbatore to connect with the economic corridor between Chennai and Mangaluru.

‘Fruitful talks’

C.E. Chakkunni, chairman, Malabar Development Council, said discussions held with the Ports Secretary were fruitful as he was convinced of the development needs.

“We have also requested him to explore the possibility of starting tourist vessel services from Beypore to the Gulf sector as they are likely to put an end to the heavy fares charged by flight operators,” he added.

Beypore Port officer in-charge G. Pradeesh Nair, manager Moosa Anas, and superintendent N.K. Abdul Manaf were present. Heads of various government departments too held discussions with the Ports Secretary on various development needs.
