The main accused in the case of firing on an assistant sub inspector (ASI) in April Gopal Tewari was remanded in police custody till June 10 by a city court on Friday.

Tewari was arrested from a hotel in Baguihati on Thursday evening. He was allegedly behind the incident in which Girish Park police station ASI Jagannath Mondal was shot on April 18, on the day of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation polls. Mr. Mondal was severely injured in the incident.

The police have seized a large cache of arms and ammunition from Tewari’s residence. The incident not only resulted in the Opposition parties accusing the Trinamool Congress of unleashing terror during polls, but reportedly caused discontent among the ranks of Kolkata Police.
