Youth held for sexually assaulting minor girl

He threatened to post her videos online

A 21-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday under POCSO Act on charges of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl and threatening to release her pictures and videos on social media.

According to the police, the girl, a 11th standard student befriended Vignesh, 21, from Nerkundram, on the social media platform.

On July 15, when there was no one in her house, he sexually assaulted and filmed her, the police said. Later, he demanded ₹5 lakh from her and threatened to post the pictures, videos online if she failed to pay the money.

The girl informed her parents about the incident and they lodged a complaint with the Vadapalani All Woman Police Station.

The police arrested Vignesh and booked him under Section 4 (punishment for penetrative sexual assault) and Section 12 (punishment for sexual harassment) of the POCSO Act. He has been remanded in judicial custody.

“Children should be careful while using social media platforms and parents should monitor them,” said a police officer.

Murder case cracked

The Chennai city police have cracked a murder case within 36 hours and arrested eight persons.

According to the police, Rajesh, 27, a resident of a multi-storeyed complex in Perumbakkam, was murdered on July 30.

Following this, a special team was formed to nab the suspects. The team rounded up eight persons, who upon being interrogated confessed to the crime, the police claimed.

The eight men — Raju, Rajesh, Imman, Raja, Vijayakumar, Prasad, Muhamad Jan, and Sivalingam — the police said had hatched a conspiracy to kill Rajesh as two of them had enmity with him.

The police also seized the murder weapon, a SUV, and two wheelers used by the accused.

The accused were produced before a court on Wednesday and have been remanded in judicial custody, a release said.
