Works on strengthening bunds and linking of Orathur and Arampakkam lakes at a cost of ₹20 crore are under way.

Once completed, the lake will help store 0.3 tmc to 0.5 tmc of water and prevent flooding of areas in Mudichur and Varadarajapuram.

Initially, ₹1.5 crore was allocated by the State for carrying out the works, said K. Satyagopal, Commissioner of Revenue Administration.

He along with Kancheepuram Collector P. Ponnaiah and other officials from the Revenue and Public Works Department visited various spots, where flood mitigation works were being carried out.

“The reservoir near Orathur will help transfer of water to Manimangalam tank. We will also be able to store a substantial quantum of water in a year. This could be supplied to areas such as Anakaputhur and Pammal,” an official said.

In Adhanur lake, shutter gates are being constructed to let out surplus water to the Adyar and ₹70 lakh has been allocated, the Collector said. Waterbodies in Manimangalam, Adhanur, Guduvanchery, Urapakkam and Nanmangalam would be deepened to improve storage capacity.
