In the tenth fatal accident at the Chennai Metro Rail site since the construction began five years ago, a worker from Bihar was killed near the Central station on Saturday night when a rebar (reinforcement steel rod) fell on him.

At 8.30 p.m. on Saturday, 14 workers, including 34-year-old Amarendra Ram, were carrying a rebar for the construction of station box (a box-like structure built for underground station) of the Metro Rail station, officials said.

Majority of the construction of this station box was already over and the process was nearing completion.

“As the workers were attempting to align the rebar to a vertical position inside the station box, it fell on Amarendra Ram.

“He was rushed to a private hospital in Parrys Corner where he died,” an official said.
