The Adambakkam police suspect that a 38-year-old mentally-challenged person might have pushed his mother, leading to her death.

The police identified the deceased as Thangabhai, 58. Her son, who was mentally-challenged, was under treatment in a special home in Paranipudur. She had brought him home for Christmas.

The police said, on December 28, Thangabhai’s son quarrelled with her as she berated him for not sleeping at night and troubling her. He reportedly beat her up, and she collapsed. A neighbour, who saw this came to her rescue and rushed her to a hospital. Later the family shifted her to the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital where she underwent a surgery, but died on Thursday night.

Following intimation from the hospital, the Adambakkam police questioned the victim’s son. Thangabhai’s daughter lodged a complaint against her brother. Thangabhai, when conscious at the hospital, had requested the police not to take any action against her son.
