Residents of Sai Skanda Apartments at Rettai Pillayar Koil Street in Devikarumari Amman Nagar, Velachery have intrusive neighbours. They slither in uninvited and loll on the compound walls or bonnets of cars and, almost always, pay a visit to the garden.
If you have not guessed it already, snakes from a vacant plot next door that is overrun with unmanaged vegetation invade this apartment complex.
The plot is believed to be owned by an NRI.
“Only after ascertaining there are no snakes near the tyres, beneath the seats or on the roof of my car, do I start the machine,” says Fahad Khan, one of the residents. As the result of reptilian invasions, a few families have moved out of the apartment complex.
Over a month ago, residents approached the Zone 13 office of the Greater Chennai Corporation seeking clearance of the densely-grown bushes. Vijayalakshmi R. says, “When we complained to Corporation officials of Zone 13, they offered to arrange for a snake charmer. They asked us to trace the owner of the plot.”
Residents of a few apartment complexes whose properties share a border with this plot have also reported reptilian invasions.
