A 15-year-old boy allegedly committed suicide by hanging in his apartment at Periyar Nagar on Thursday. The police said he took the extreme step due to stress related to studies.

Sources in the Peravallur police said S. Lokesh of GKM Colony, Periyar Nagar, was a student of Standard X at Don Bosco Matriculation School in Peravallur. He was to appear for an examination on Friday.

On Thursday, he was alone at home in the evening after his mother Saraswati had gone to pick up his younger sister from school, sources added.

“Around 5 p.m. Lokesh's father Sathyamoothy returned from work and knocked the door. As there was no response, he peeped through a window and found his son hanging from a ceiling using a towel.

He cried for help and neighbours rushed in and broke open the door,” said V.K. Manoharan, Sub-Inspector of Police, Peravallur.

A Peravallur police team carried out a preliminary investigation at the spot. The body was sent to the Government Kilpauk Hospital for post-mortem. No suicide note was found, the officer added.

Police said the boy was under intense stress over an examination which he was to take on Friday morning.

Sources at the Don Bosco School stated that Lokesh was a good student and was also active in sports. As the teenager had volunteered to donate his eyes, his eyes were given away to the Government Ophthalmic Hospital in Egmore with his father's consent, the police added.

On Friday afternoon, Lokesh's body was handed over to his parents after the post-mortem. Peravallur police have registered a case under Section 174 (Police to inquire and report on suicide) of Cr.P.C.
