The Crime Branch CID police arrested five more suspects including, Mohar Singh, who is believed to be the man who led the gang that looted ₹5.78 crore from the Salem-Chennai Egmore Express train in 2016. The police said the money will be traced after interrogation.
Currency amounting to ₹342 crore was transported from Indian Overseas Bank, Salem to Reserve Bank of India, Chennai by train on August 8, 2016. At the Egmore Railway Station, authorities found that ₹5.78 crore was stolen by unidentified persons. After investigating, the CB-CID team stumbled upon the involvement of a gang from Madhya Pradesh. They arrested two suspects — Dinesh, 38, and Rohan Pardi, 29, from Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh on October 12. Upon interrogation, the two accused confessed to their involvement in the crime as part of a gang headed by one Mohar Singh. Subsequently, the special team arrested Mohar Singh and five others.
Mohar Singh and his associates — Rusi Pardi, Kaliya alias Krishna, Mahesh Pardi, and Biltya alias Brajmohan, were brought to the city and produced before XI Metropolitan Magistrate, S. Prakash at the Saidapet court on Tuesday.
Custodial interrogation
After hearing a petition from the CB-CID , the XI Metropolitan Magistrate, Saidapet, granted a 14-day custodial interrogation of the suspects.
A senior police officer said, “We will thoroughly interrogate the suspects to unearth the facts on how the gang hatched and executed the plan.”
