The Chennai Corporation will revamp the abattoir in Perambur after several years of litigation. Following an order of the Supreme Court, the civic body has submitted a proposal to the government for operating the abattoir, requesting administrative sanction for ₹21.72 crore for revamping phase I of the project and construction of phase II on the same premises.
The Buildings Department of the Chennai Corporation had floated a tender on DBOT (Design, Build, Operate and Transfer) basis for construction of the abbatoir in 2008. The work was awarded to Hind Agro India Ltd on February 25, 2009, for 22 years with two years of execution period in phase I. The work was completed in 2010.
However, butchers protested and the labourers’ association filed a case in the High Court. After the case was dismissed, a set of cases were filed by Kapoor Basha and Hind Agro India Ltd, leading to a delay in operating the facility.
“The Supreme Court has ordered the floating of tenders for the second phase and operate the abattoir,” said an official.
Following the protest by the butchers at the slaughter house, writ petitions were filed in the High Court.
The High Court passed orders on December 15 and December 22, 2014. Against the High Court orders, the Corporation filed SLPs in the Supreme Court.
On hearing all the SLPs, the Supreme Court passed an order directing the Corporation to ensure that the second phase is completed.
