Due to a signalling fault and the subsequent protest, two Chennai-bound trains were delayed.

Rail traffic was disrupted on Tuesday morning after passengers of a Arakkonam-Chennai EMU staged a protest as the train was delayed because of a signalling fault at the Arakkonam railway station. Consequently, two Chennai-bound trains were delayed. According to the officials, there was signalling problem in one of the tracks towards Chennai. “As a result, trains were not run on the stretch. The passengers of the Arakkonam-Chennai EMU were agitated because of the delay from 7.10 a.m. to 7.40 a.m. They staged a protest. As a result, two trains from Thiruvananthapuram and Mangaluru were delayed,” an official said.

‘No announcement’

The passengers complained that many trains were running late on a regular basis. “Every day, trains run late by 30 minutes to one-and-a-half-hours. Many passengers are finding it difficult to reach their offices on time. Railway authorities should ensure that proper announcements are made,” said Naina Masilamani, member, Divisional Rail Users Consultative Committee.
