Through the gaps

Motorcyclists sneak through “spaces” created in the safety barricade on Rangarajapuram flyover

In August 2018, steel barricades were placed on the middle section of the Rangarajapuram flyover to check traffic violations.

A week ago, the concrete base of a few of these steel barricades were found damaged, and an opening had been created for motorcyclists to sneak through and drive on the wrong side.

The Y-shaped flyover has two arms with one connecting Bazullah Road with the Kodambakkam railway station through Station Border Road and the other connecting Bazullah Road with Subramania Nagar in Kodambakkam.

The two arms — one extending towards the railway station and the other towards Subramania Nagar — can have only one-way traffic movement.

As per the existing traffic arrangement, only motorists coming from Bazullah Road are allowed to use the arm towards Subramaniya Nagar.

These motorists can’t proceed straight towards the railway station using the ramp there.

Similarly, motorists coming from Kodambakkam railway station can use the ramp only to reach Bazullah Road and not vice-versa.

Motorists who want to access Kodambakkam railway station from Bazullah Road have to proceed towards Subramaniya Nagar and then take a ‘right’ turn to reach the railway station via Station Border Road.

“We will repair the damaged barricades and close the breach soon,” says a Corporation official.
