The Chennai District Election Office has directed officials to monitor violations pertaining to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in the vicinity of educational institutions during social gatherings on the premises, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Following the filing of an FIR against the Congress party for organising an event at Stella Maris College, officials have intensified monitoring of violations of provisions of the Tamil Nadu Open Places (prevention of disfigurement) Act, 1959.

“Illegal banners have been noticed in large numbers in the city. We have started monitoring such illegal banners used for election campaigns,” said an official.

The Chennai District Election Office has sent a report to the Chief Electoral Officer on the event at Stella Maris College. According to sources, the report points to the permission given for the social gathering one month ahead of the announcement of elections. But action has been initiated against the organisers of the event after noticing violations to the Tamil Nadu Open Places Act.
