MDMK to boycott R.K. Nagar by-poll

June 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated April 03, 2016 02:20 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) will boycott the by-poll to the R.K. Nagar Assembly constituency.

A resolution adopted in the high-level committee meeting of the party said that elections of late had become an occasion for voters to judge the money power of the political parties rather than their performance and ideology.

“We in the past stayed away from Srirangam and Pudukottai by-elections to uphold our self-respect,” the resolution said.

“The State may face elections to the Assembly as per schedule or even in December this year with the blessings of the Election Commission.

“The statement of the Election Commission on free and fair elections is not worth the paper on which it is written,” the party further said.

TMC decision

Meanwhile, Tamil Manila Congress (TMC) leader G.K. Vasan said his party would take a decision on the by-election in a couple of days.

Asked about senior TMC leader S.R. Balasubramaniam’s statement that political parties should facilitate the unanimous election of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa by keeping themselves away from the contest, Mr Vasan said he had just expressed a general opinion.

Earlier, Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol. Thiurmavalavan met Mr. Vasan and invited him for a seminar to muster support for the formation of a coalition government in the State.
