Welcoming the recent order of the Southern Bench of National Green Tribunal, residents of Anakaputhur, Pammal and Pozhichalur have appealed to the Kancheepuram district administration to help put an end to pollution in Adyar river. A couple of days ago the NGT had asked the Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT) to file a detailed report on the projects undertaken by various government agencies.

Local bodies close to the river, dumped garbage on its banks, residents said. According to residents of Pozhichalur and Gowl Bazaar, tanker drivers release untreated sewage early in the morning in the river. Residents’ welfare association activists from Anakaputhur charged that the greatest polluter of the river was untreated effluents from the tanneries and the beautification of the river would not work until letting of sewage water and dumping of garbage are stopped.

An engineer with the Public Works Department said that they were not aware of the dumping of garbage and said their officials were instructed to check it. On river restoration, a detailed project report is expected in the months to come, CRRT sources said.
