HC fiat on Chennai Corporation’s legal cell

Expressing disappointment over several years taken by Greater Chennai Corporation to file counter affidavits in many cases, the Madras High Court on Wednesday called for details regarding the functioning of the Legal Cell in the civic body and whether any system had been put in place to keep a check over its performance.

Justice S.M. Subramaniam directed the Deputy Commissioner to explain by September 19 the action initiated by the corporation for filing of counter affidavits and other related documents in all cases pending in the court and what was the action taken against officials who fail to file counter affidavits within a reasonable time.

The judge pointed out that counter affidavits were yet to be filed even in cases that were pending in the court for the last five years.
