Flying squad seizes large quantities of gold, silver

Consignment headed for jewellery shop

A flying squad of the Election Commission seized large quantities of gold, diamonds and silver articles in Pallavaram, while they were being transported from a godown to a jewellery shop without relevant documents.

While the team, led by Elumazhai, an officer of the Excise Department, was checking vehicles on the Thiruneermalai Road on Friday evening, a van belonging to a leading jewellery outlet passed by. Officials stopped the vehicle and inspected it.

No documents

On inspection, they found that gold, diamonds and silver articles were being carried by the employees of the outlet in the vehicle to a shop in Chromepet. The vehicle was taken to the tahsildar office, Pallavaram, where officials opened the consignment in the presence of the staff.

“About 27kg of gold jewellery, gold bars, diamonds and 14kg of silver articles were seized due to lack of proper documents and they will be handed over to the treasury,” an officer said.

A flying squad in the Singanallur Assembly segment on Saturday seized foreign currency worth ₹43.44 lakh from Jayaraman, an Ondipudur resident.
