The Teynampet police have requested the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and other Central agencies to probe further into the unaccounted foreign currencies seized from the five accused in a robbery case.

The police had arrested Thamim Ansari and his four associates, besides recovering cash and a two-wheeler from them, after they had robbed $17,900 from Jaffer Sadiq, owner of a mobile shop in Triplicane.

A senior police officer said, “Originally it was complained that ₹4 lakh worth foreign currency was robbed and later it was found that it was worth ₹13 lakh. Both the complainant and the accused were not able to reason for the unnaccounted cash. We suspect an hawala money transaction. Hence we requested the ED to further probe the matter.”
