A recurring problem faced by residents in Velachery is the poor clearance of garbage from the collection points.

Piles of garbage remained uncleared in several areas over many days, and the overflowing bins posed health hazards, residents complained.

While conservancy operations in house-to-house garbage collection is going smoothly, the main problem faced by residents is the uncleared garbage raising a stink at segregation points.

Residents in streets coming under Division 179 of Velachery were facing the problem, they said.

Plots to dumpyards

Several street corners covering Annai Indira Nagar, Bhuvaneswari Nagar, VGP Selva Nagar, Baby Nagar, Tansi Nagar and Sarathy Nagar Extension, had uncleared garbage, residents charged.

Social activists complained that garbage bins were placed near vacant plots in residential areas, converting them into dumpyards. The conservancy operation was outsourced to a private agency, and therefore, garbage collection was irregular, they added.

S. Dhanapal, a resident of Sarathy Nagar Extension, said residents in the area were facing severe hardship due to huge piles of garbage, including food waste being dumped on the streets.

The problem is aggravated by stray cattle and community dogs who feed on the uncleared garbage.

Residents claimed that despite several complaints, the local officials had not taken steps to remove the garbage regularly.
