A petition has sought cancellation of the entertainment tax exemption given to a recent release, ‘Maan Karate’, as the film does not fulfil the conditions for deserving a concession.
In his petition filed in the Madras High Court, through counsel, P.T. Perumal, the petitioner, I. Jayaseelan, also a stage singer, said the film has a song that ‘promotes alcoholism’.
The title of the film is not in Tamil as ‘karate’ is a Japanese word, the petition said. Even though the primary condition for entertainment tax exemption is not fulfilled, the commercial taxes department had granted tax relief to the film.
The First Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Satish K. Agnihotri and Justice M.M. Sundresh ordered notice to commercial tax authorities, returnable by April 16.
